On the heights of the magnificent island of Santo Antão (“ilha das Montanhas”), Casa Espongeiro is first and foremost a family home, where Lúcia and Alain, Franco-Cape Verdean couple, and their children Misaël (11 years old) and Lou ( 8 years old), welcome lovers of the great outdoors and Nature, in French, English or Cape Verdean Creole, at an altitude of 1,400 meters, closer to the stars and the pure sky.
There, the nights are very calm. Its spring climate from October to April offers the traveler a pleasant temperature to relax, recover from treks and sleep in the tranquility and scents of the forest. From May to September, we appreciate the proximity of the forest, far from the stifling heat of the coast.
The forest massif of the plateau (the largest in Cape Verde) and its different slopes offer geology and botany enthusiasts an incredible place of exploration. The endemic flora and fauna of Santo Antão are within reach of the camera.
Ideally located on Planalto Leste, on the edge of the old road known as the “Corda road” connecting Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande from the interior, the village of Espongeiro (80 inhabitants) is at the crossroads of many hiking trails ( Lagoa, Cova de Paul, Ribeira de Paúl, Pico da Cruz, Ribeira da Torre, Coculi, Caibros, Alto Mira, Chã de Pedra, Janela etc …) for all levels, on foot, by bicycle or on the back of a donkey ( for children only), each time with breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding valleys. Your host will be inexhaustible on the small paths to discover around the village and on the good tips to make the most of your stay. The remarkable Cova crater can be seen within a 30-minute walk.
